Hiking with Your Dog: Tips for a Safe and Fun Adventure 🐾

There’s nothing better than hitting the trail with your best four-legged friend! Whether you’re exploring your local park or tackling a new trail to check off your TrailBingo card on the ExploreMore app, hiking with your dog can be a rewarding experience — as long as you plan ahead and practice good trail etiquette. Here’s everything you need to know before you leash up and head out.

1. Start with Leave No Trace: Plan Ahead and Prepare

The first principle of Leave No Trace is to plan ahead — and that includes planning for your pup! Research the trail before you go to make sure dogs are allowed and to check any leash rules or seasonal restrictions. Pack extra water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and poo bags. If you’re new to Leave No Trace, it’s worth learning the basics so you and your dog can protect the places you love to explore.

2. Know Your Limits (and Your Dog’s!)

Every dog is different. Pay attention to your dog’s energy levels, especially in the summer heat. Take frequent breaks in the shade and watch for signs of overheating such as heavy panting, drooling, or fatigue. Start with shorter, easier trails and build up as your pup’s endurance improves.

3. Keep Your Dog on a Leash and Under Control

Even the friendliest dogs can spook wildlife or other hikers. Always keep your dog on a leash, and keep them close and controlled — especially on multi-use trails shared with bikers or runners. A short leash (around 6 feet) gives you better control and helps everyone enjoy the trail safely.

4. Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations

Trails expose your dog to other pets, wildlife, and natural bacteria, so make sure vaccinations are current. A quick vet check before hiking season begins ensures your dog is ready for the great outdoors.

5. Bring the Essentials: Water, Treats, and Poo Bags

Dogs get thirsty fast! Bring plenty of water for both of you, along with a collapsible bowl. Pack treats to keep energy up and reward good behavior. And most importantly — bring poo bags and pack out all waste. Dog poop doesn’t decompose like wildlife waste and can harm native animals by spreading disease or attracting predators. This ties directly into Leave No Trace Principle #3: Dispose of Waste Properly.

6. Choose Dog-Friendly Trails

Not all trails are pet-friendly, so double-check before heading out. Some parks, especially wildlife preserves, restrict dogs to protect sensitive wildlife or plant areas.

If you’re in the Dallas area, you’re in luck! We have tons of dog friendly trails and almost every location on the Dallas TrailBingo card in the ExploreMore app is dog-friendly (with the exception of the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary). Download the ExploreMore app, open your city’s TrailBingo card, and start exploring with your furry friend today!

7. Practice Good Trail Etiquette

Be mindful of other hikers. Step aside to let others pass, and keep your dog calm and close. A friendly smile and a simple “he’s friendly!” can go a long way — but remember, not everyone loves dogs as much as you do.
